Ice Theatre of New York (ITNY) is a dance company committed to developing figure skating as a performing art. Founded in 1984 by Artistic Director, Moira North, ITNY is a non-competitive, artistic outlet for some of the top international figure skaters, with choreography commissions by innovative contemporary dance makers such as Jim May, Jacqulyn Buglisi, Ann Carlson, David Dorfman, David Parsons, Susan Marshall, JoAnna Mendl Shaw and more. ITNY is based at Sky Rink, Chelsea Piers, and tours their work to rinks and stages throughout the country. ITNY is also the first figure skating company to receive grants as a dance company from National Endowment for the Arts, New York State Council on the Arts and NYC Department of Cultural Affairs.
Ice Theatre's 2011 Benefit Gala will honor US Champion and Olympian Johnny Weir. The performance will be on Monday, October 24 at 7pm at Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers and will be followed by cocktails and dinner at The Lighthouse also at Chelsea Piers. Proceeds will benefit Ice Theater's outreach and artistic programming. (See our website for more information.)
Ice Theatre of New Yorks premier educational outreach program, The New Works and Young Artists Series at Riverbank State Park in Harlem and at the World Ice Arena and City Ice Pavilion in Queens, is dedicated to giving emerging choreographers and performers an opportunity to present new works. They show these works to an audience of new York city school children and engage the students in a free skating clinic after the performance.
